The world of electronics is making major advances and it has influenced the industry, markets and our daily lives. The microprocessor or microchip has seen constant upgradation and development. The latest chip technology making grounds is the multi-core processor.
Microprocessors are now in common use in almost all consumer electronics products. It has become common place in smartphones, netbooks and other mobile devices. Until recently these processors embedded here, were simpler. However in recent years mobile processors have increased tremendously in capability, matching the complex chips found in personal computers.
An advanced smartphone today has probably a One Gigahertz processor and Gigabytes of memory equal to some earlier desktop PCs. This enables new mobile applications to be developed, to cater to various requirements.
Intel the world’s largest semiconductor chip manufacturer is moving towards manufacturing unimaginably small chip geometries of 15 nanometres and smaller. The smaller the chip geometries the better the performance and relatively lower the power consumption. The company announced that it would pour into factories and facilities around $8 billion to achieve smaller geometries.
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) recently showcased its upcoming “Llano” chip which is a highly integrated design targeted at downsized computers due to be out early next year.
This AMD Fusion Accelerated Processing Unit (APU) integrates the main processor and graphics function on to one chip using 32-nanometre technology. It features up to four CPU processor cores and integrates AMD’s 5000 series graphics technology. It is targeted at, among other designs, ultra-thin and mainstream laptops.
According to market research firm, Strategy Analytics, baseband integrated applications processors are gaining market share in the smartphone market. Baseband integrated applications processors serve a broad market offering a cost competitive solution. Whereas the stand alone applications tend to serve high performance devices with latest features supported.
Qualcomm Inc. is a leading developer and innovator of wireless technologies. It announced that it will support, with its integrated chipset solutions and system software, the launching of phones based on Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 series. These smartphones will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Platform.
The Snapdragon chipset is a highly integrated single chip solution that includes a high performance (1GHz) enhanced CPU. It also integrates Qualcomm’s leading 3G mobile broadband technology as well as rich multimedia, HD video, 3D graphics and GPS.
All this in a single chip (Snapdragon QSD8250 platform) enables manufacturers to deliver smart, slim and powerful mobile devices with long battery lives.
According to Luis Pineda, Senior Vice President, marketing and product management at Qualcomm CDMA Technologies, the company (QCT) is enabling the development of a wide array of smartphones, smartbooks, pocket tablets and e-readers today.
QCT is probably the world’s largest semiconductor producer providing chipsets to more than 50 customers and partners with nearly 60 3G operators around the globe.
The advancement in microprocessor technology has redefined the experience of wireless mobility and enabled new generations of increasingly powerful electronic devices, mobile handsets, portable computers and extended innovative applications to an ever widening range of products and services all over the world.
